“I’d like to stop by a Mexican restaurant on the way to the Ronald McDonald House party today,” Dara announced as she breezed into the den Saturday morning. A study in contrasts, she wore her dark hair clipped back in a ponytail, a white ruffled shirt, black jeans, and knee socks with no shoes in sight yet. Her face devoid of makeup, she looked at him with clear blue eyes that emanated a feminine strength Ridge hadn’t glimpsed since he’d first met her.

He sensed something different about her, as if she had reluctantly obliged Ridge’s determination to resist an involvement at the same time she decided to stop denying her own attraction for him. His body responded immediately, and the term that came to mind was dangerous.

He’d thought that if he put their mutual attraction out in the open, they’d be able to handle it better. Now he wasn’t so sure. If God had created a woman to be Ridge’s waterloo, she would be Dara. When his fingers itched to release the pearl buttons of her blouse, he reminded himself that they had no future. And just because he had an arousal that wouldn’t quit didn’t mean he would let her get away with skipping security measures. He lifted his eyebrows. “Ronald McDonald House party?”

“Oops,” Dara said, with a wince that quickly spread to a smile. “I guess I forgot to tell you last night.”

“According to your itinerary,” Ridge reminded her firmly, “you’re going to a fund-raiser tonight.”

“Right.” She nodded. “And this afternoon I’m going to a party,” she said just as firmly.

“I like advance notice.”

Her expressive face flashed with impatience. “I would have told you, but the person in charge called yesterday morning. I didn’t get a chance to tell you last night because we were talking about other things.”

He didn’t respond to her meaningful comment about “other things.” After she’d gone to bed last night, he’d spent more than an hour on the back porch struggling to keep his perspective on Dara from being shot to hell. Ridge sighed, contemplating the different precautions he would need to take. “When you make a schedule change that will involve security, you need to let me know as soon as possible.”

“This is as soon as possible. And you don’t have to come if you don’t want to.”

Ridge narrowed his eyes. “I go everywhere you go.”

She opened her mouth to make a heated reply, then paused. A soft feminine chuckle bubbled out instead. Giving him a sideways glance rife with seduction, she shook her head. “Everywhere I go?” She held his gaze and her voice grew husky. “I wish.”

Ridge stifled a groan at the blatant sexual invitation in her voice. “You’re not making it easy for either of us when you say things like that.”

“Making it easy wasn’t part of our little agreement. Let me know if you change your mind,” she told him, bold as brass.

“Dara,” he began, his voice full of warning.

Reluctantly heeding his wishes, she sighed. “Okay, okay,” she grumbled.
